Muscular action causes or intensifies some lines and wrinkles on the face. Frown lines between eyebrows, the lines around the eyes (“crows feet”), and forehead wrinkles are good examples. With the introduction of neuromuscular modulators Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA) it has become possible to treat one of the main causes of wrinkles: those wrinkles caused by repetitive motion. Botox® is purified proteins and temporary nerve impulse blockers that bind to nerve endings and prevent the release of chemical transmitters (acetylcholine) that activates muscle fiber contraction. With the chemical transmitter blocked, the muscle fiber does not contract, or contracts more gently. Botox® injections soften selected muscles of facial expression, thus preventing the formation of wrinkles and creases caused by repeated movement patterns, and allowing fine to moderate creases and wrinkles present to gradually soften or even disappear.
Treatment Onset and Frequency:
Botox® usually takes full effect within a few days to two weeks after injection into the muscles. As the medicine gradually wears off, full contraction of the previously blocked muscles resumes. Therefore, injections need be repeated to continue to experience the benefits. These neuromuscular modulators are not a permanent cure for wrinkles, but are instead an effective, ongoing treatment for wrinkles. Because every patient is different, with differing amounts of muscle contraction strengths, and varying use of the facial muscles of expression, the degree of results varies from person to person. The treatment results generally last 3 months. Recommendations include re-treatment before the effects wear off and strong muscle activity returns and begins to reform wrinkles.
